Boys Climbing Ropes @ 2Kolegas, 13 November 2010

It was a Shanghai-packed weekend. Two SH bands I’ve heard a lot about recently played on Saturday night at different venues. I planned accordingly and saw X is Y on Friday at Yugong Yishan so that I could catch Boys Climbing Ropes the next night at 2Kolegas.
Unfortunately I missed all of Wanderlust and only caught the last song from IDH, but it was worth the late entrance to catch Boys Climbing Ropes. They are a loud and energetic band but I wouldn’t call it noise. They lock together tightly and get an overall boost from the talented vocalist Pei Pei, who also plays solo under the name Little Punk. They finished their set to the most sincere “再来一歌” chant I’ve heard in a while, to which they replied they’d only play Misfits songs. I requested “Where Eagles Dare” and they played “Astro Zombies” which is cool because that would have been my second choice.
After these two shows I have a heightened interest in heading south. There seems to be a lot of good energy, with bands like Rainbow Danger Club self-releasing digital albums (stream above) and Trash A Go-Go planning brilliant maneuvers like a party-bus trip to Suzhou where Pairs and The Instigation will spearhead a fuzzed out garage punk invasion.
Fun stuff. Now for that BJ-SH high-speed train to start running…
Boys Climbing Ropes has got songs / lyrics / taste / presence / charisma. I think they are by far the best band in China today.
