pangbianr presents: two nights of film screenings and discussions on March 26th and 27th at HomeShop (view map) as part of the JUE Music + Art Festival. Both nights begin with screenings at 5pm and will have breaks and discussions spaced throughout the evening. Food and drinks will also be available for sale.

5pm: Yunfest in Beijing / 云之南纪录影像展在北京

The 5th Yunnan Multi Culture Visual Festival (aka Yunfest) is taking place now in Kunming. There now, we’ll bring back a selection of short documentaries from Yunfest’s “Youth Forum” to showcase emerging talent and new film work from China’s ethnically diverse southwest. Mandarin with English subtitles.

UPDATE: Fresh from YUNFEST, we will screen Living Without Men (~30 mins), a short documentary by Guangzhou-based filmmaker Luo Yi. Living Without Men focuses on the lives of three elderly women in Foshan, in southern China’s Guangdong province. In their early 20’s, these women took a vow of celibacy, swearing an oath not to marry. Now in their 90’s, Living Without Men captures their amazing life stories and follows their day-to-day lives in a small nursing home.

会放映《自梳》，就是已届婚龄的女子，自己把发辫盘在头上梳成髻子，表示终身不嫁，又称“梳起”。自梳女是广东珠江三角洲特有的一种婚嫁习俗，盛行于清初，直到辛亥革命初期，历久不衰。按旧俗，女子出嫁时必须辫子盘在头上，梳成髻子，表示不再是少女。自梳女不结婚，也得择个良辰吉日，通过一定的仪式，在亲友的众目睽睽下，自己把辩盘成髻子，表示不再求偶。

6:30pm: Jalainur / 《扎赉诺尔》

Jalainur in a mining area located in the far northern Chinese province of Inner Mongolia, near the Russian border. For over one hundred years, Jalainur’s coal mine has been an important resource for China’s industrial infrastructure and for the shipping of goods both domestically and internationally. “Jalainur” is a beautifully shot fiction film depicting life and relationships in this scenic, remote outpost.

扎赉诺尔是一个矿区,位于内蒙古自治区满洲里市，它地处中国的最北端，与俄罗斯的陆路连接处。扎赉诺尔已有一百多年的历史,其中扎赉诺尔露天煤矿的运输工具,就是在国内外至今已很少见的蒸汽机车。经过百年的开采，矿场地面上形成一个巨大的坑，这些蒸汽火车终年日复一日的在这里工作。眼下，这个“大坑”已经基本掏空，蒸汽火车也将随着退出历史的舞台，随之而来的是一大批与之相关的工人面临着下岗。本片的创作初衷来自“送君千里，终须一别”这中国老话。

8pm: Three Minute Group / 三分钟

Three Minute Group is a collective of about 10 CAFA graduates who each make one three minute film every month. Each month has its own theme and a screening event organized by the group members. This month “3mins” will debut their freshest batch of 10 shorts (~30 minutes) at our event and afterwards lead a discussion about their process and experiences operating as a uniquely coordinated independent film collective in Beijing.

3mins，就是三分钟的影像拍摄。以一个月为周期，每次由一位拍摄者出下一回的主题。然后集体放映。没有任何目的，就是玩。欢迎新成员加入，但要带作品参与。如果参与者有好玩的其它短片，也欢迎一块拿来放。欢迎闲得蛋疼者，不欢迎捣蛋者。放映结束以后大联欢~~~

5pm: “Reframing the Artist” (dir. / 导演 Sascha Pohle)

Reframing the Artist is a short (~30 mins) meditation on the depiction of “the artist” in film. Director Sascha Pohle takes scenes from past works such as “Pollock” and recreates them in Dafen, a village near Shenzhen where master works of oil on canvas are reproduced by hand at an industrial scale for commercial sale. Mandarin with English subtitles.

6pm: “TAPE” (dir. Li Ning) / 《胶带》（导演：李凝）

TAPE is a surreal quasi-documentary focusing on artist and dancer Li Ning and his “obsession” with tape:

“After many years, my research into the use of tape reached the point of obsession and madness: it was the focus of my life everywhere, on the stage, in my works and in the depths of my thoughts…”

After the film (running time ~150 mins, Mandarin with English subtitles) there will be an audience discussion on Reframing the Artist, TAPE, and the role of the filmmaker as voyeur, participant, and interpreter of the framed image. Bilingual discussion.

《胶带》影片概述：历经多年，我对胶带的研究和使用达到了痴迷和疯狂的境地。
我在舞台上再现、在生活中撕扯、在思想深处胶着……无处不与它共鸣、共生。
在中国这样一个魔幻国度中，我的所作所为注定成为荒诞中的荒诞，以及最终走向徒劳与尴尬。
随着国家大事件的不断发生，我被卷入各种极端行为中，
在那里，我终于用自己的身体把“现实”重构，达到了与“超现实”浑然一体的艺术境界。
但最终，我成为一张照片，被社会的力量贴向一张求职表格，被迫地运行于国家机器之上。
