Sinotronics presents: BEME 2013
the second annual Beijing Electronic Music Encounter

BEME is the first event of its kind, bringing artists and audience together from Beijing’s diverse electronic music scenes as well as guests from greater China and abroad for a series of performances and cross-genre dialogue. It is China’s biggest live performance event dedicated tot he full range of contemporary electronic music culture, a curated cross-section of the many forms that “electronic music” can take in 2013 Beijing. It is a dialectic between headphones and PA, DJ and live, software and hardware, noise and music, dance and transfixion.

Last year’s BEME was spread across three venues over three days; this year it all happens at Dangdai MOMA venue The Post Mountain on Friday, October 25 and Saturday, October 26. Both days feature two separate stages: an “early session” featuring more experimental and underground sounds, and a “main session” featuring headlining local and international producers, DJs, and live bands.

Tickets are 100rmb per day, or 80rmb per day pre-sale (available only at The Post Mountain).

Artist Introduction

RROSE

“Enigmatic producer Rrose came to the attention of the worldwide techno scene in 2011 after the release of 3 EPs and an album on the now defunct Sandwell District label. Densely textured and experimental yet wholly at home on the dance floor, Rrose’s music demonstrates a deep knowledge of both techno and pre-techno electronic music. Other identifying features include a focus on the tactile qualities of sound and the integration of gradual, interconnected transformations of material.”

“Rrose (like that, with two Rs) is a techno producer named after a conceptual character (Rrose Sélavy) created by Marcel Duchamp in the 1920s. Rrose put out four releases on a label called Sandwell District, which was set up by Function and Regis, plus Silent Servant, all names that will be known to those who delve into the more serious underground side of techno. The label became a really big deal for a while, before closing abruptly at the height of its influence. This is what Resident Advisor said about it, back in 2010: ‘Sandwell District is, without doubt, THE underground Techno label of the moment. With support from all quarters (they count Marcel Dettmann, Ben Klock, Len Faki and the Berghain crew, Laurent Garnier, Miss Kitten, Jeff Mills, Sleeparchive, Speedy J, Troy Pierce, among their many devotees) they have not just blurred the boundaries of techno, but have dissolved them and re-built it in their own unique image…’ Rrose put out some of the last releases on the label, straight-up pieces of deep, driving techno that sound like they were drilled out of the bed of the ocean. They garnered massive praise, but almost nothing is known about the artist. No one really knows his name, where he’s from, what else — if anything — he’s released and how he got mixed up with Sandwell District. Oh, he often DJs in drag, that much we know…”

EFDEMIN

“Efdemin behind the decks: permanently in motion, wildly gesticulating, chuckling, dancing, sweating and going through his records over and over again. His DJ sets are a lecture in tightrope walking. From being lost in reverie, total seriousness, pure delight, wit and grit, reduced house tracks, straight and dry techno, the Berliner by choice serves it all – peppered with breaks and surprises. Expose yourself to this tour de force over the course of a few hours and you certainly will never forget it. Due to his output and particularly his constant and remarkable DJ presence, Efdemin is surely one of the most independent, versatile and inspiring characters in today’s club scene. With long-players and 12-inches for Dial and Curle, his remixes (e.g. Depeche Mode), his Pigon project together with RNDM, and his drone and ambient pieces under his original name Phillip Sollmann, Efdemin is equally at home in very different circles. In the world of art as much as in the techno realm, and while moving from intelligent pop quotes into the universe of Sun Ra, he does the splits effortlessly and without overstretching. Efdemin and his music are considerately adapted to time, place and certain moments, but never lost in between.”

DEAD J

“Dead J is the alias of Beijing-based electronic musician Shao Yanpeng. He is one of the key players of Chinese electronic music. His music deviates from traditional Minimalism, with dreamy melodies and a multiplicity of sound fragments. From 2005 to 2008, he released three albums on Modern Sky Records: Mental Imagery, Mental Magic, and Psychedelic Elephant. In 2011 Dead J released his newest album, Tíng,Tái,Lóu,Gé, on his own label, Waveform. For the past few years, Dead J has been exploring and expanding his own aesthetic and worldview from different perspectives. He has worked with leading Chinese director Meng Jinghui and created several unique soundtracks for many of Meng’s most experimental and best-selling theatrical productions, such as Flower in the Mirror, Moon on the Water (2006), Rhinoceros in Love (2008), Soft (2010), and To Live (2012). In 2011, Dead J was invited by Goethe Institute to re-compose the soundtrack for the classic German silent film, Metropolis. Dead J is also keen on promoting electronic music culture in China. He has made a documentary film, Date, about the 2009 Berlin electronic music scene. In the film, he has profound conversations with eight highly influential musicians, visual artists, and label founders, including Monolake, Manuel Göttsching, Jan Jelinek, and Thomas Fehlmann.”

GEOMETER

“Geometer is Kyle Kaplan. He was heavily involved in classical music in earlier years, but exposure to rave culture, Autechre, composition software, and entheogens redirected his interest to the vast creative possibilities of electronic tools. Often under the moniker of Sasha Borodin, Geometer has played shows in Montreal, New York, Los Angeles, and Boston. His performances previously utilized custom-built software for an integration between music and video, but presently he performs solely with audio hardware, preferring the transparency and streamlined approach of a laptop-less performance. He is originally from Los Angeles, but has lived in Taipei since October of 2011. His sounds are images of machine dreams – jigsawed rhythms, juxtaposed patterns, spaces opening and closing.”

FAR/∞ / Liu Yiwei

“FAR/∞ is a Beijing-based interactive design and electronic music project founded by digital artist Liu Yiwei in 2012. Liu Yiwei lived in Berlin from 2009 to 2011, where he began to focus his work on sound and visual design, media installation art, and the study and creative use of computer software development. In 2012 he came back to Beijing and began to develop a series of live performances and exhibitions. His work has been featured in the Metrowaves Convention (Me:CON), Get It Louder Festival, and an exhibition at CMODA (China Museum of Digital Arts). The title ‘FAR Infinity’ is for live electronic music, and FAR Media Lab is for installation and media art.”

SROT (Square Root of Two)

“SROT, also called √2, is a duo making electronic music with samplers and MIDI keyboards, but incorporating live instrumentation as well. Its members J Lee and Robin Hua used to play guitar and keyboard, respectively, in the Shanghai post-rock band Triple Smash. Triple Smash frequently collaborated with Shanghainese trip hop singer Zhong Chi, so the jump from meandering rock instrumentals to electro boom bap is not as abrupt as it may seem. SROT is definitely more electronic-oriented, but the guitar and synth work comes through to set it squarely apart from laptop-oriented ‘live electronic’ that still invariably feels like a dude pressing play on his laptop and wiling out on gin & tonics. SROT has the aura of consummate musicians with a clear vision, tightly rehearsed jams, and a dash of that same experimental inclination that will make them a natural fit in Beijing.”

2’s(Square Root Of Two 简称SROT)
