We’re helping Shanghai friends Death to Giants put on a pretty interesting show later in the month at our favorite Forbidden City dive. DtG is a two-piece band that does music of no classifiable genre in no normal time signatures. Mathy jazz punk, they say. You might know them from their breakout music video, “Anyone Can Learn to Count in Chinese”:
DtG has a thing for collaborating with all kinds of musicians and producers, resulting in a number of “Death to _______” hybrid bands. Last October they collaborated with Mongolian folk band Guren as Mongolian Death Squad:
That was put together by Mongolian music head/”Shanghai’s number 2 DJ”/the first dude to spin in North Korea, DJ B.O. We interviewed him a while back.
B.O. is coming to Beijing with Death to Giants on Friday, April 19, when they’ll perform as Death to Cinema. DtC will improvise sound tracks to short film clips curated by B.O. The films revolve around a theme and the Beijing premier is set to be a very special one.
Earlier in the night DtG will play a standalone set of jams off their brand new album, Blood Pours Out:
There will also be a set from Threshold of Forest: “a virtuoso cellist and beat-maker who does live sampling of his cello, sonic manipulations and layering to create danceable and intelligent electronic music.”
DtC will cap off the night with a multi-media spectacle incorporating several special guests from Shanghai and Beijing.
All this for 40rmb (includes a gratis beer). 9:30pm start. What Bar map HERE.
DtG also plays the next night at Temple, where they’ll Voltron with Shanghai producers Acid Pony Club and become Death to Ponies.
