Jojo Kao: Taipei to Beijing
By Liu Kai, 2010

Here are some spontaneous snaps recorded by Taipei native Gao Qianyi (Jojo Kao). Originally a painter and illustrator, Jojo has more recently taken up photography. From 2008-2009, Jojo’s life and work were rooted in two places: Taipei and Beijing. Among other subjects, Jojo began photographing friends who also knew life in both these cities. The photographs don’t necessarily invite comparisons between the two, but these scenes and faces are deeply moving moving nonetheless. No matter how her eye captures young people acting or thinking, she finds the clearest and simplest way to portray the genuine quality of life. Each moment is derived from her innermost longing for freedom and purity.
Jojo was invited to participate in the 2009 Geisai Art Festival in Taiwan, where she earned the praise of Japanese artist and youth icon Takashi Murakami. Jojo was also awarded the Copper Prize at the Geisai Art Festival in Taipei and was subsequently invited to the 14th Geisai Festival in Tokyo. She is currently living and working in Osaka.
