Pangbianr – 猴急 PRIMATE ANXIETY [Side A] – 7th February, 2016 by Frequency Asia on Mixcloud
Side A, hosted by our friends Frequency Asia, follows up on our 2016 preview, giving you an idea of what to look forward to over the next year. On the more polished end of the spectrum, we have preview tracks of forthcoming albums from Maybe Mars (The Fuzz, Future Orients, Birdstriking), D Force (DOC), Ran Music (Shen Lijia), and SVBKVLT (Soulspeak). We also get a glimpse of new underground structures popping up around the country. Qiii Snacks Records, a new label started in Guangzhou by the capably DIY crew behind Full Label, is represented by 柠檬精/PETECHEN, yourboyfriendsucks! and Die!Chiwawa!Die! Wuhan punk landmark Vox Livehouse has also just started a new label, which currently supports local post-rock unit Chinese Football. DOC from Dalian is the happy marriage of two of that city’s most steadfast indie bands, Doc Talk Shock and Which Park. The Fuzz from Xi’an have just released their sophomore album on Maybe Mars, following their debut on Modern Sky and an early self-released demo; they’ll release the new one, which was produced by Yang Haisong, on a groundbreaking 42-city tour of China. And the duo behind Real Live in Xiamen turn in a track of pure ’90s fuzz nostalgia from The White Tulips. We sprinkle in a few of pangbianr’s current Beijing favorites for extra grit: Lonely Leary & Boiled Hippo.

猴急 Primate Anxiety [side b] by Josh Feola on Mixcloud
The flip is underground b-sides. After a terse opening salvo from Ding Chenchen, Dawei kicks it off with a blistering critique of the music-industrial complex, which is funny because just last night he performed on the season finale of China Star with Cui Jian. (They cut out the best part, naturally.) His critique of commerciality is not lost on the crowd that follows here. Side B’s a long trudge through a Gobi sandstorm imported into the city center, a meditation on the urgent tedium of 21st-century life, an open question (sometimes just a scream) about the primacy of primates, just a bunch of weird music being made in Beijing right now. If noise is the edge between human and machine, “the etymological relationship of noise to nausea” is maybe the last code to crack. One small step for man, one punctuated leap for…
