Japanese Bento Lunch Delivery

To round off her months-long project of delivering bento lunches in the Chaoyang area, my friend Uemura Emi gave a presentation last Saturday at The Shop in Jianwai Soho. Emi documented her “clients,” which ranged from random food-aware artists to large corporate entities. The end result gives an interesting parallax view of Beijing food culture. Here’s an excerpt from her project notebook (click for a larger image):

Big surprise. This company deals with Food. The office is well-known Chinese food corporation of some processed foods and healthy juice. Even though so many people work in this office at a time of visit, my customer let me look around inside. Individual desk is separated by partition. Piles and piles of products. He gave me a black bean sauce and a grape juice.

She taught us how to sculpt onigiri with some pickled plums newly imported from Japan, then demonstrated how to make the egg rolls she included in her bento boxes.

Emi operates a small plot of farmland a few hours outside of Beijing, and may do some more food-related events in the near future. Check out The Shop’s Douban page for updates.
