La Loupe has been playing in and around Beijing since November 2009. After forming the band in Oberlin, OH, Maia Bernstein and Jordan Maseng played only a handful of shows before setting out for Beijing, where they had both lived and studied previously.

Since then, La Loupe has played regularly at D22, Jiangjinjiu Ba, Jianghu Jiuba, Mao Livehouse, What Bar, and other venues around town. They also performed at the MIDI Festival in May 2010.

Now having put the finishing touches on their debut full-length CD, the band will self-release it as part of the Pangbianr Music and Film Festival on July 25 at 2kolegas.

La Loupe has always been a favorite Beijing-based band of mine, not only because my less-than-satisfactory Chinese can still grasp some of their lyrics, but also because they prove that it is possible to start a successful band in the city with little more than an idea, a few guitars and the willingness to play the odd Sunday night behind gulou.

UPDATE: 委身么不, the La Loupe cd, is now available for international order.
