Xiao He & Hanggai
@ Obiwan, 29 May 2010

I went to this show under the impression that Xiao He would be playing together with Hanggai, the Mongolian/rock troubadours, but at around 10 when the crowd started hitting maximum density in Obiwan’s disproportionately small first floor performance space and Xiao He got on stage solo I realized that this was not to be.

No complaints though. Xiao He did his thing, which last night involved some tried and true passages from his looped acoustic/incomprehensible high-pitched rambling playbook. Maybe it is comprehensible to someone with better Chinese, you be the judge:

(Pardon the hair, Beijing’s tallest man callously positioned himself front and center for the entirety of the set.)

I was not too interested in seeing Hanggai… a packed Jiangjinjiu is uncomfortable enough and I didn’t want to stick around to see what would happen in Obiwan’s cellar. Luckily their costumed rock stylings permeated through the walls and out to my perch on the bank of Xihai so I could still hear them while enjoying some Multiluck wine bought at the xiao mai bu around the corner.
