Yan Jun

Yan Yulong

“Jegog”

White Ensemble

Yin Yi

The 5th Sally Can’t Dance avant-garde music festival will take place on Saturday and Sunday, November 7-8 at School Bar in Beijing. Like the 4th edition, which was held in Spring 2012 at the then-unnamed space that eventually became XP, this year’s Sally Can’t Dance Festival is co-organized by Zhu Wenbo (Zoomin’ Night) and Josh Feola (pangbianr).

Unlike in past years, the focus for this year’s Sally Can’t Dance festival is not on individual artists or bands, not on improvisation, but on composers, and ensembles playing according to their compositions.

Of course the concepts of “composition” and “composer” that we’re using are very loose. Each day will feature 6 original works, performed in different spaces within School Bar, composed by individuals at the bleeding edge of China’s experimental music vanguard.

date: Saturday & Sunday, November 7-8, 2015
time: 4-7pm (early session) + 9pm-midnight (late session)
place: School Bar (53 Wudaoying Hutong, near Andingmen subway stop)

Wang Xu + Josh Feola

Title: “Re/delay (I:o:I)”

Two drummers disrupt the boundary between signal and noise. On one side, Drummer 1 plays a simple snare drum rhythm, live. On the other side, Drummer 2 records this rhythm, live samples it, transmutes its structure into a new rhythm, records and loops the output. They switch sides. The noise from Round 1 becomes the signal in Round 2: Drummer 2 now performs live this recomposition, while Drummer 1 further de/recomposes it. Repeat until the original signal is rescued from the noise.

Wang Xu: born in Inner Mongolia, started to play in Beijing bands from 2006. He’s currently the drummer of White+, where he experiments with the threshold between electronic and acoustic percussion.

Josh Feola is a Beijing-based writer and musician. He has been active in the Beijing music scene since 2009 via his organizational platform pangbianr and as manager of live music venues D-22 and XP. He was Music & Arts editor of SmartBeijing.com from 2013-2015, and continues to write about the Beijing culture beat on a freelance basis. Feola currently co-runs the curatorial netlabel Sinotronics, plays drums in Beijing bands Subs and Vagus Nerve, and performs/records solo under the name Charm.

Xu Cheng

Title: “Early Winter Dawn”

“Early Winter Dawn” is a piece that Xu Cheng composed in 2014 as an homage to Schubert’s Winterreise (“Winter Journey”). The imagery reflects the lyrical content of a never-ending winter wilderness; leaving behind the ostentation of mortal life, gazing off with the north wind towards the frozen river, that loneliness, solitude, dissatisfaction with the present; to stubbornly pursue an uncertain dream kingdom, ending in anguish at its unattainability. The traveler leaves the familiar city, setting off by himself, listening to the sounds of wind and snow accompanying the thin jingle of a mail car. In the midst of the swiftly moving journey, he’s seeking peace in his heart.

duration: 30 minutes

Xu Cheng (b. 1980): Since 1999, Cheng has worked with different styles of sound and music, including musique concrète, plunderphonics, electro-acoustic, harsh noise, ambient, and improvised music. In 2003, his works were selected in the first survey anthology of Chinese sound art, China: The Sonic Avant Garde. In 2005, together with JUNKY, he formed the NOIShanghai event series to promote experimental music. NOIShanghai has presented over 50 concerts to date by sound artists and noisers from around the world. That same year, Cheng joined the world-renowned noise group Torturing Nurse, which has presented over 100 performances and 200 releases. In 2010, Cheng joined the free improvisation group Free Music
Collective of Shanghai. In 2011, together with sound artist Da Xiao (aka Huang Lei), Cheng
formed A/V industrial group the Mustangs in Social Modulator. In 2012, Scape-Sequencer, an A/V work accompanying the live performance of Cheng, won the Award of Distinction in Prix Ars Electronica in Austria.

Yan Jun

Title: “Gestures 2”

“Gestures 2” is composed for one dancer and three players. It’s developed from “Gestures 1”, which was presented in early 2015. In the previous version, the composer takes the role of dancer and conductor. It was originally inspired by the live performing of improvised music and electronic music. Normally, performers of these kinds of music are known to be short of body movement. This accompanies the anti-virtuosic, anti-expressive and strange attitudes of these kinds of music. But these tiny or non-expressional movements also present the bodies. As all tiny or rough sounds are worthy of being listened to. It’s fine if one thinks these movements are unmerited to be titled “dance”, or these sounds are unmerited to be titled “music”. Perhaps this makes it better as we enjoy not only the things defined as “dance” or “music”.

performers: Yu Ji (body performer); Dong Xing, Li Yingwu, A Bing (music performers)

Yan Jun: musician and poet. Born in Lanzhou in 1973. Based in Beijing.
His activities include improvised music, field recording and organizing. Sometimes performs at and with audience’s private space (Living Room Tour project, open for book).
He is a member of FEN, Tea Rockers Quintet, and Impro Committee. And founder of the guerrilla label Sub Jam.

Title: “Jegog: Guitar and Percussion Ensemble”

“Jegog” refers to a performance style reflecting Indonesian gamelan and orchestral arrangements. “Jegog” is a composition for six guitars, broken down and reconstructed into a percussive matrix. The performers can choose their own performance materials and apply their own rules. In other words, the composer deconstructs and displays the contents, and the performers then reconstruct the piece. If it’s more simple and pure, you can hear more; even if it’s chaotic noise, it’s also much more than that.

duration:20 minutes
performers: White Ensemble

Yan Yulong (b. 1989, Harbin), lives in Beijing. Frontman of neo-psych band Chui Wan. An active leader among the younger of generation rock, experimental, and improv musicians in China. He works with a wide variety of different styles of music, butoh dance, documentary theater, and avant-garde composition. His solo projects include playing electric/acoustic violin improvisation. He was initially interested in playing drone, minimalist, and modern compositions… but he’s not limited to that now.

Yin Yi

Title: “JuLuo”

“JuLuo” was composed for a physical theater work in 2006. At that time, all of the sounds Yin Yi used were from visual instruments with laptop. Now it will be the first time he has real instrument players to present it. Rather than how it sounds, now he will focus on how it looks, how the players move in the space, how the players weave the sound net, how every tone becomes a part of player’s breathing system.

Duration: Belongs to space
Performers:Li Tieqiao (baritone sax), Jun-Y Ciao (clarinet), Xiu Di (alto sax), Zhu Wenbo (bass clarinet), Yuan Shuo (french horn), Daniel Rothwell (trombone), Shi Yuran (flute)

Yin Yi (b. 1978) is a Shanghai-based artist, composer, and curator. Yin Yi’s artworks include sound, video, installation, and experimental music. He also organizes art events to observe, understand, and proofread his art practice.

Title: “Píng Zè”

“Píng Zè” was first performed in an embryonic form at the 4th Sally Can’t Dance festival in 2012. Two performers insert an array of different instruments and performance styles into an identical set of electronic effect parameters, reconciling their different approaches in a set unity of rhythm. In four amps placed in different locations throughout the performance space, the audience can clearly hear the flow and circulation of the sound, especially when the musical content is almost completely static. Over the course of a long performance, each performer modulates the other’s effect parameters, adding an element of growing indeterminacy throughout the piece.

Performers: Zhang Shouwang, Yan Yulong

Zhang Shouwang: founder of Carsick Cars and White+, also performs a wide range of solo projects and permutations of the floating WHITE ensemble. Zhang Shouwang’s music fundamentally reflects a core focus on minimalism, psychedelic music, improvisation, avant-garde music, electronic music, and other styles without borders. In addition to music, he’s also participated in many trans-disciplinary, multi-media collaborations, blurring the boundaries between the music, art, and theater worlds.
