Zhang Shouwang @ Plutopia 2011

RSVP: $15 at the door (free with SXSW Interactive, Gold or Platinum badge)
Venue: Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center (600 River St.)

Carsick Cars frontman will play the futuristic Plutopia SXSW kickoff show.

Their description: “…a well-crafted link between SXSW Interactive, Film and Music. Furthering our mission and intent to create unique ‘sense events,’ this year’s extravaganza will include interactive installations, performances by world-renowned musicians / artists, talks, art exhibits, compelling projections, DJs, demonstrations, performance art, robots, projections, gaming fun, locally produced, artisanal food and beverages, and much more.”

Shouwang is playing in “The Immersion Chamber” which sounds cool/ominous. Should be worth checking out. Stream Shouwang’s live solo stuff here: Shouwang @ December 2010 Zoomin’ Night

Queen Sea Big Shark @ IODA

Date: Wednesday 16 March, 12:45pm
RSVP: online at iodasxsw.com
Venue: Emo’s Annex (6th & Red River)

QSBS kicking off the week at one of the big “opening day” parties.

Full lineup here: IODA Opening Day Bash

Carsick Cars @ The Grackle

Carsick Cars @ Sea Now! (popantipop)

Date: Wednesday 16 March, 10pm
RSVP: online at popantipop.com
Venue: Annie’s West (706 W. 6th St.)

Organized by popantipop, this one has a fairly robust lineup with a separate acoustic stage. eXene Cervenka is playing on the latter.

Carsick Cars in-store @ End of an Ear

Date: Thursday 17 March, 2pm
RSVP: Free!
Venue: End of an Ear (2209 S. 1st St.)

In-store performance at the best Austin record shop, End of an Ear. Come for the free show, stay for the ebay-free vinyl crates and carefully curated selection of 80’s b-movies on VHS.

Queen Sea Big Shark @ Mike Galaxy Day Party

Date: Thursday 17 March, 5pm
RSVP: Free!
Venue: Guero’s (1412 S. Congress)

International line-up at Guero’s on Thursday. It’s a free show and right around the corner from End of an Ear (see above) so why not do both?

Carsick Cars @ Cease to Exist Night of Rage III

Date: Thursday 17 March, 8:30pm
RSVP: $5 at the door
Venue: Baby Blue (1522 E. 12th St.)

One of the shows I’m personally most excited about. Excellent line-up including Grass Widow, who came to Beijing last year for the Tanglewood Festival. Since I kind of tune out and willfully avoid most festivals in Beijing I missed them and am looking forward to seeing them here.

Organized by my friend Veronica of the great Cease to Exist radio podcast.

Full event info here: Night of Rage III (facebook)

Bonus heads-up: pangbianr will be VJ’ing some experimental Chinese film at this one!

Carsick Cars @ Fader Fort

Date: Friday 18 March, 1:30pm
RSVP: online at thefader.com
Venue: a temporary fort (1101 E. 5th St.)

Probably the biggest show for Carsick Cars. They’re opening the Fort on Friday. This year Fader seems to have fully jumped the hipster rap hype train, booking Mac Miller, Wiz Khalifa, OFWGKTA, The Cool Kids, the based god, and Curren$y throughout the week. I will be interested to see some of these guys outside of the internet.

Zhang Shouwang @ Equinox Mish Mash

Date: Friday 18 March, 4:20pm
RSVP: Free!
Venue: Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive In (2326 E. Cesar Chavez)

Strong pangbianr vibe on this event: music, food, art and film, multimedia and multi-sensory kind of thing. And it’s free. Artisan sorbet for sale. Check their full SXSW spread here: Equinox Mish Mash

Carsick Cars @ Tom Tom/Cake Shop Showcase

Date: Friday 18 March, 8pm
RSVP: $5 at the door
Venue: Baby Blue (1522 E. 12th St.)

Another one I’m particularly excited about. Tom Tom is a really cool magazine that focuses on female drummers. Cake Shop is a venue/record shop/bakery known well to anyone who is interested in music and has been to New York. Veteran progressive label Kill Rock Stars is a co-sponsor.

Killer lineup including workshops and a massive drum jam at the end. Also, a few slots after CSC, MIKE WATT is playing (with Migu)!!

All the info you’d need here: Tom Tom Magazine/Cake Shop NYC at SXSW (facebook)

Queen Sea Big Shark @ Billboard Pro Showcase

Date: Saturday 19 March, 3pm
RSVP: Free!
Venue: Buffalo Billiards (201 E. 6th St.)

QSBS will be featured in the Billboard Pro emerging artist showcase. The show is FREE and anyone with an official SXSW artist’s badge gets free top-shelf margaritas.

More info here: Billboard Pro SXSW Showcase (facebook)

Carsick Cars Official SXSW Showcase

Date: Saturday 19 March, 10pm
RSVP: Register at sxsw.com
Venue: Malaia (300 E. 6th St.)

Finally, to wrap things up, Carsick Cars will play an official SXSW showcase at Malaia on East 6th. They’re part of an eclectic line-up that also includes Taiwan electro-pop outfit Go Chic.
