17 February 2011: the Lantern Festival marks the official end of the year’s beginning, and our fourth “Third Thursday” event takes place at D-22. We’ll screen a controversial independent film from Shanghai and showcase three hard-working, fast-rising experimental bands.

The screening will start at 8pm sharp. Door price is 30元 (20元 for students).

We will screen Making Love by post-80s Shanghai-based director HU Chongxi. HU graduated from Shanghai University’s film school in 2002. Capitalizing on his generation’s newfound ability to inexpensively produce films using relatively low-cost digital technology, he made Making Love, a 95-minute feature, in 2007 and submitted it to the 2008 China Independent Film Festival. He describes the film:

Why is Shanghai so beautiful?
Because countless young men and women devote their youth and passion to her. And so, Shanghai dazzles; and so, the young men and women grow old…
“Making Love” follows a few such young people entering society, beginning life, losing friendships. It portrays the madness of this farewell ritual and captures the sincerity and poignant beauty of this loss…
Life’s greatness will swallow you whole.
Shanghai, tonight you are so beautiful…

The screening will be followed by three acts representing the new vanguard of Chinese lo-fi and experimental sound: Luxinpei (who recently released a tape on Rose Mansion Analog), Fat City (who just launched a soundcloud site where you can stream their work), and Xiao Hong Yu Xiao Xiao Hong, an innovative duo that somehow manages to surprise every time I see them perform.

Check out the younger generations and mark the third thursday of every month on your calendar for more transmissions from the new film/music underground.
