Perhaps in anticipation of D22 closing its doors temporarily for a summer hiatus (possibly related to renovations?) the last Zoomin’ Night for a few weeks turned out a formidable crowd and solid performances.

When I first moved to Beijing full-time I was surprised to learn there were two experimental nights every Tuesday. After reading Pete DeMola’s thorough article on D22’s Zoomin’ Night, I wanted to profile its late counterpart: Waterland Kwanyin at 2Kolegas.

Though Pollard himself acknowledged that “there’s not really a big noise scene anywhere,” quality noise musicians of any sort in or passing through Beijing are relatively rare; thus I was surprised that this performance, one of the best I’ve seen recently, didn’t interest more people enough to attend.

La Loupe proves that it is possible to start a successful band in Beijing with little more than an idea, a few guitars and the willingness to play the odd Sunday night behind gulou.
